1. Introduction

Welcome to BillAfrique. BillAfrique ('we', 'us', 'our', or 'the Company') is a financial technology company providing digital utility and bills payment services — including electricity, airtime top-up, data, cable TV, internet subscriptions, to individuals and businesses across Africa.

This Privacy Policy governs the collection, storage, use, and protection of your personal information when you visit our website, utilize our mobile application, or use any of our utility and bill payment services (collectively, the 'Services').

By accessing or using our Services, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to the terms of this Privacy Policy.

2. Information We May Collect From You

To facilitate seamless utility bill payments, we collect information you provide directly, as well as data generated automatically during your use of our platform.

Account Information

Name, email address, phone number, and account password.

Utility & Transaction Data

Meter numbers, account numbers, distribution company (Disco) preferences, transaction amounts, and timestamps required to generate tokens.

Payment Details

We do not collect or store your full credit/debit card numbers or bank pins. All payment inputs are securely captured directly by our licensed payment processors. We only receive transaction statuses (e.g., 'Success' or 'Failed') and reference numbers.

Technical & Usage Data

IP address, device type, operating system, browser type, and app interaction logs.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your personal information only for legitimate and clearly defined purposes.

  • Conduct surveys, polls, and user research to improve our Services.

4. Automated Fraud and Risk Assessment

To keep our platform secure and protect users from unauthorized card usage, BillAfrique employs automated risk-screening tools.

Our systems monitor transaction patterns for anomalies—such as an unusually high frequency of token purchases on different meters using a single payment method.

If a transaction triggers a risk alert, it may be automatically declined or temporarily held for a manual security check by our operations team.

5. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties.

We only share information with partners absolutely necessary to complete your transactions.

Utility Distribution Companies

To verify your account identity and generate tokens.

Licensed Payment Processors

To securely process your card payments, bank transfers, or mobile money transactions.

Service Providers

Trusted third-party tools used for sending automated transaction SMS alerts.

Legal Authorities

Only when strictly required to comply with local data protection regulations, subpoenas, or valid legal processes.

6. International Data Transfers

BillAfrique primarily processes and stores your data in Nigeria. However, some of our third-party service providers may be located outside Nigeria, which may result in your data being transferred to and processed in other countries.

Safeguards

  • The recipient country provides an adequate level of data protection.
  • Appropriate safeguards are in place, such as contractual clauses, standard data protection terms, or binding corporate rules.
  • You consent to such transfers by using our Services.

7. Data Security and Retention

We retain your personal data only for as long as is necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, including legal, accounting, or reporting requirements.

BillAfrique implements industry-standard technical and organisational measures to protect personal data against unauthorised access, loss, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.

No method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure.

Where required by law, we will notify you and the relevant supervisory authority of any qualifying data breach.
